The Geek Smackdown

So, Jason Kottke, suggested that data normalization wasn't really all that important. And then....the internet took offense. My favorite part, in response to Kottke's analogy that denormalization is like a smoker keeping a lighter in his car, his coat pocket and his office drawer, someone said, "Dear Mr. Kottke. We would like to ship you a lifetime supply of lighters, however we have 17 different address for you in our database. Can you please verify your shipping address with us?"

Hee hee!

Can anyone possibly think of a better way to start your first day at a new job than to discover your car has a flat tire? Yeah, me either.

This is great

Hotel WiFi grows up @ Engadget.

The WiFi part isn't that interesting, but the hotel-based blog is exactly what I want to see out of the future of the web. Instant recommendations from other people who have stayed in the area, what could be better. One day soon, when mobile-always-on-broadband is ubiquitous (be it via WiMax of next gen cellular), maybe that whole concept of leaving notes in mid air (so to speak) with GPRS will become reality. In a strange city wondering if a restaurant is any good? Pull out your PDA and check if anyone's tagged it.

Poker Update

A follow up to my initial poker woes. I was close to just cashing out last night, but I decided to play one last SNG. A $10 one this time. Matt sweated me the whole time, and I won the thing. $50, sadly I was still down $5 for the day. Good to know I can place in the SNGs when I play solid poker and stick to the game plan.

The Word of God

So with all the hubbub surrounding Mount St. Helens recently, I did a little research to see what (if any) effect the 1980 eruption had on Eugene. In that process I came across this message on a creationist website. Choice quote: "I use the word of God to judge science and all that I see. In my book, if it don't line up with the word of God, Then it is not true." How do you have a rational discussion with someone like that? I salute the people that actually try. This guy is just like Flanders (I've done everything the Bible says - even the stuff that contradicts the other stuff!)

I'll not be seeing the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

I had already basically made up my mind on this. A thorough examination of my memories of reading the books as a child revealed that I didn't really enjoy them at the time, even before I knew of the Christian undertones. (If they can be called undertones, I haven't read them since I was, I'd guess, 9 or 10, from what I've read recently they're basically right out in front.) That being said, after reading this article my decision was sealed.

Gresham and his wife, Merrie, now live in a big house in Ireland, where they run a Christian ministry that specialises in healing the trauma caused by abortion, which they believe is infanticide inspired by Satan.

...

So, just one last question. Is it true that he stands to make an enormous amount of money from the film of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe?

The microscopically trimmed moustache stretches into a smile. "Mind your own business," he says.

So, basically, going to see the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe puts money into the pockets of someone who believes abortions are inspired by Satan. Yeah, I'll pass.
